Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide
It is not metabolized by humans due to the absence of enzymatic activity (disaccharidase) to split the galactose-fructose bond but is readily metabolized by bifidobacteria
Due to its low sweetness it does not have many food applications. Lactulose, however, has a number of applications in pharmaceutical preparations for treatment of constipation and hepatic encephalopathy.
