Lactate / Lactic Acid, also known as 2-hydroxypropionic acid, exists in two enantiomeric forms: L-lactate and D-lactate. These enantiomers are produced through distinct biochemical pathways and serve unique functions within biological systems.
Lactic acid has been shown to suppress inflammatory responses in vaginal and cervical epithelial cells significantly. The presence of vaginal lactic acid triggers an anti-inflammatory response in human cervicovaginal epithelial cells and reduces the production of pro-inflammatory mediators linked to HIV acquisition.
