The microbiome research is highly interdisciplinary and encompasses humans, animals, plants, and environmental areas with impacts on health, ecosystems, and food security. While human microbiome research has been strongly promoted thanks to high investments, environmental microbiome research remains underfunded. It requires complex, cross-disciplinary approaches and generates extensive multi-omics data, the collection and standardization of which is challenging.
