Via ENS, gut microbes influence gut motility.
The ENS controls all gastrointestinal functions, including gut motility, nutrient absorption, electrolyte, mucus secretion, vascular blood flow, intestinal permeability, and wound healing.
The ENS possesses peristaltic motor, secretory, and immunological function in addition to more complex behaviors such as nonpropulsive mixing or segmentation, slow orthograde propulsion via the migrating myoelectric complex (MMC), retropulsion of noxious substances, and modification of nutrient handling and changing of local blood flow.
