Lumazine is a bicyclic, nitrogen-containing compound formally known as 2,4(1H,3H)-pteridinedione. It is a precursor in the biosynthesis of riboflavin (Vitamin B2), which occurs in plants, fungi, and many microorganisms, but not in animals or humans.
The enzyme and lumazine derivative Lumazine synthase is crucial for the penultimate step in the biosynthesis of riboflavin. It has generated interest as potential antibiotic targets because this metabolic pathway does not exist in humans or animals.
