Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. In 2022, it is expected to cause 7,650 deaths and there will be 99,780 new cases in the USA.
From 1989 to 2013, the death rate from Melanoma (cutaneous) stayed about the same. But from 2013 to 2018, there was a big drop in deaths, going down by 5.7% each year.
The change happened because we moved from using less effective treatments like high dose interleukin-2 and interferon-alfa to a new type of immunotherapy called checkpoint inhibitors.
In the case of cutaneous melanoma, malignant melanocytes with characteristics of neural crest stem cells interact with non-malignant populations within this microenvironment.
Most patients do not survive for more than 6 months after being diagnosed with advanced disease
The Sentinel lymph node, defined by Morton as the first node in the lymphatic basin that drains the primary melanoma, has been documented to contain the first site of metastasized disease
