The etiologies of chronic liver disease vary, such as infection by viruses or bacteria, alcohol or toxic substances, excessive accumulation of fat or heavy metals, and abnormal immune responses
These causes can lead to viral hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), toxic hepatitis, and autoimmune liver disease. In addition, they can be aggravated by cirrhosis or liver cancer after a chronic course.
