In the colon, mucus has two layers
The newest mucus is made of organized sheets of mucin polymers. These sit right above the epithelium and come from different types of goblet cells, like those at the base of crypts and between crypts.
Even though mucus from different goblet cells works differently, the mucus from crypt-base and inter-crypt goblet cells can't be penetrated by bacteria. This helps form a sterile barrier called the inner mucus layer (IML).
