Ruminococcus torques (RT) is a common and plentiful component of the human gut microbiota (1), but its functional role in regulating host metabolism is still mostly unknown. Ruminococcus torques belongs to the species in the healthy human gut - the abundance is low: about 0.97% of all species in the healthy human gut (3). It is an asporulate and member of Clostridium cluster XIVa (2) and belongs to the mucin degrading/consuming bacteria (4).
It is one of several bacterial species exacerbating ALS symptoms in mice (5).
