In 1995, Venter and Smith sequenced bacteria. Before this, only viral genomes were sequenced. They reduced bacterial genomes to manageable sizes. Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) / Whole-Genome Shotgun Sequencing (WGS) was developed by them. Computer software assembled sequence data into genomes.
