Fermentation produces propionate and acetate, and often gas, catalase positive.
The genus Propionibacterium includes gram-positive bacteria (rods).
The bacteria are primarily saccharolytic and lactate fermenting bacteria that metabolize sugar, starch, cellulose and produce acetate, and propionate.
