Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially butyrate and propionate, act as histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs), modifying gene expression in both cancer and immune cells. This epigenetic modulation can

  • inhibit cancer cell proliferation,

  • induce cell cycle arrest,

  • trigger apoptosis and autophagy,

  • increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, contributing to tumor cell death.
