When germ-free mice were transitioned to an antigen-free diet, which consisted only of amino acids, salts, and vitamins, there was a significant decrease in the presence of CD4+ CD25+ FOXP3 high Treg (peripherally induced) in the small intestine compared to those mice that were transitioned to a standard chow diet. Interestingly, the Tregs in the colon did not show any change. This finding probably relates to the exposure to antigens in these specific tissues.
