Eukaryotic initiation factor 5A (eIF-5A) is the only known protein to contain hypusine, and this modification is crucial for its activity. eIF-5A is involved in various cellular processes, including:

• Protein Synthesis: It is believed to assist in the elongation phase of protein synthesis, although its exact role remains under investigation.


• Cell Proliferation: Hypusine modification is essential for cell growth and proliferation. Inhibition of hypusine synthesis leads to growth arrest and cell death.
