As people get older, their immune system changes, which affects the balance of bacteria in their gut. This change, known as age-related microbial imbalance, often leads to an increase in harmful bacteria like Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcaceae, and a decrease in helpful bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids. This imbalance can cause problems in the intestines by making the gut lining more permeable and leading to ongoing inflammation. It also worsens issues with MNP (mononuclear phagocyte) function through a cycle of negative feedback.
