Diminished abundance and uptake of Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) limit the substrate available to fuel Colonocytes / colonic epithelial cells, prompting a metabolic switch from high oxygen-consuming mitochondrial Fatty Acid Oxidation (FAO) / Beta Oxidation to anaerobic glycolysis. This metabolic switch forces cells to pull exogenous carbon sources from the blood supply (i.e., glucose), resulting in lactate production.
