Pyocins are peptidic toxins that belong to the tailocins of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Types of Pyocins

There are three types of Pyocins:

R-type

F-type

S-type

Prevalence in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains

R-type and F-type pyocins are found in 90% of all Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.

S-type pyocins are present in 70% of all Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.

Engineered E. coli and Pyocin S5

Engineered E. coli are now capable of producing the bactericidal pyocin S5, which originally comes from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pyocin S5 kills Pseudomonas aeruginosa through membrane damage.
