The colon mucus layer has two parts. The inner layer blocks bacteria. The outer layer allows microbiota colonization. MUC2 is a key part of mucus. It is a glycoprotein with many O-glycans. Goblet cells in the intestine make mucus and control glycosylation. Some microbiota can bind or cleave mucin glycans. These interactions help with colonization. Microbiota use mucin glycans, what affects mucus properties (1)
