The inside of a grown-up human's intestines is lined with one layer of tall, thin cells. These cells come from special cells called intestinal stem cells (ISCs). In a lab model called the intestine-on-a-chip (IOAC), scientists take ISCs and gut bacteria from a person and grow them together in a special chip with many channels. This chip is designed to act like a real intestine, copying things like the flow of fluids, movements similar to digestion, communication between the body and bacteria, and interactions between different types of cells.
