Microbial beta-glucuronidases in the gut can reactivate the excreted, inactive metabolite of irinotecan. Reactivation results in adverse drug reactions, including severe diarrhea. Inhibition of these enzymes may reduce irinotecan-related adverse reactions in select patient populations.
