The constantly changing and dynamic environment in the Intestine / Gastrointestinal Tract (Gut / GIT) poses a significant challenge to the immune system. Therefore, it is not surprising that the gut contains the greatest number and diversity of immune cells in the body. To maintain local tissue homeostasis, different intestinal segments have evolved unique defense strategies, including changes in the composition and function of epithelial subtypes, the integrity of the mucus layer, and regional specialization of the immune system.
